Melted Spatula

Okay, so let me give you a little background. I’m a freshman in high school, and I am taking culinary arts. Every Monday and Tuesday we go to the kitchen to cook. Usually when we get into the kitchen we wash our hands, get instructions from the teacher, and start our cooking process. Well, yesterday we went into the kitchen, washed our hands, and didn’t get any instructions on what to do. All we got was the recipe for hoecakes, which apparently was what we were making. We get the ingredients, put them in the bowl, and started mixing. However, my group and I had a problem. One, we don’t know what we’re doing, and two, our batter looked thicker than everyone else’s. It wasn’t that big of a deal though, we just added some water and went on with our lives. Until the teacher said it was suppose to be thick, but once you add something you can’t take it out. This one girl came over to us and put some oil in our pan, which I was grateful for because I didn’t even know we had to put oil in the pan. Then we started frying. While my friend pored some batter in the pan for two different hoecakes, I went to get a spatula. A plastic spatula. I know what you’re thinking, why the heck did you grab a plastic spatula to use in hot oil? My answer to that is, well, I don’t really have an answer. I didn’t really think anything of it, I use a plastic spatula when I make pancakes so it should have been fine. I was wrong, it wasn’t fine. I gave her the spatula, she flipped the hoecakes, and took them out of the oil. They were under-cooked, by the way. Then she put the next batch in the oil and repeat. except for this time she couldn’t get the hoecakes out of the hot oil! She’s standing there trying to flip it and she can’t, and I, well I wasn’t paying attention. Oops, that one’s my bad. She turns around and says, “Lauren, can you get these out? I can’t, they won’t flip.” I try to get them out and actually succeed, for once. Yeah, that batch was burnt, with just a little bit of melted spatula on them. It was at that moment that we realized, the spatula was half way melted down the back. At first we were like, “What do we do?!”, but then we just started laughing. I mean, who wouldn’t? I went and got a metal spatula this time and we finished up our last batch of hoecakes. This time they were perfect. Not under cooked, not burnt with melted spatula on them, they were just right. My friend told the teacher that she melted the spatula, and he was chill about it. However, apparently after we left he was a little heated about it, but oh well, what can ya do? So yeah that’s the story of how we melted a spatula, and hopefully a lesson for you to know not to do that, if you didn’t already.

Snow Day!!

It was a Wednesday, and you already know I didn’t want to go to school. I mean have I ever actually wanted to go? Anyway, it was cold outside. The coldest it had been all month, so my mom said, “Bundle up. Wear your hat, a thick jacket, and maybe even a scarf and gloves.” Mostly because I have to stand outside, for a good 10 minutes, to catch the bus. I’m inside, where it’s warm, you know just getting ready. Brushing my teeth, packing my lunch, filling up my water bottle, and getting my winter attire on. I open the door… and it’s snowing! It’s snowing a pretty good amount and yet we’re still going to school. I was thinking “Why the heck are we going to school?” However, at the same time, I was kind of fine with it because the snowflakes were so pretty! I got to see them close up too because I was wearing a black jacket. The bus had already picked up the kids down the street, and I had been waiting at the bus stop for about five minutes when a girl that rides my bus came riding by in a car. Her mom stops the car, the girl rolls down her window and says, “School’s cancelled from what I’ve heard.” I said, “Oh really? Thank you.” I walked back to my house. When I got to my porch, my bus still hadn’t come yet, and I called my mom. I told my mom that this girl had said school was cancelled, but she said, “No it’s not, if school was cancelled they would have called me.” I said, “Oh well, she rides my bus and her mom was driving her back home.” “Hold on I’ll check, what time does your bus come?” asked my mom as my bus drove past my stop. “Now”, I said, “It just passed by!” Then my mom yelled at me and told me to call my grandpa to see if he could pick me up because she couldn’t. I did. He said he was on his way to a doctors appointment half way across town, but he could pick me up afterwards. At this point I was crying. Yes crying, I know such a baby, what a drama queen. But, come on, I missed my bus, my mom was mad at me, my grandpa can’t pick me up, and they still haven’t freaking called off school. Okay, maybe I was a little mad too. I turned on the TV and called my friend because she had texted me and I had some time to kill anyway. When she answered the phone she told me they had called off school and at the same time my mom had texted me the same thing. I was so happy! I texted my grandpa that he didn’t have to pick me up anymore because they called school off, and I changed back into my pj’s. Then I ate some food and cleaned the house for my mom because I’m just a good daughter like that. Well, that’s the story of my first snow day in 2019. Thanks for reading I know it was long and probably boring, but if you read all of it, go you. Anyway, until my next blog post, bye!

This Post is Dedicated to My Brother

My brother is older than me, he’s 19. I call him Bubba because when I was younger I couldn’t say his name or brother, so he will forever be known as Bubba. He’s technically my half brother because we have different dads, but we don’t see his dad. His dad is not that great of a person. While my brother was in high school he made okay grades, like A’s, B’s, C’s, and the occasional D. He did his homework almost all the time because he had a class period that was just study hall. However, when he got home he ate a snack and went to his room to play video games. My parents, mostly my dad, would yell at him for not paying attention/not listening, getting bad grades, getting in trouble, not getting a job, and only playing video games. My mom tried to be more reasonable with him, but my dad would get mad at her and tell her she’s treating him like a little kid. Need I remind you this all happened when he was around the age of 17-18. I didn’t agree with my parents. Yes, my brother needed to be more responsible, but they should have told him what  they thought he should do and if he didn’t do it then it would come back to bite him in the butt later. However, on the other hand, I see their point. They wanted the best for him and they didn’t want it to bite him in the butt, even though he would learn his lesson that way.

While he was still in school he talked about joining the Navy when he graduated. His reasoning for joining the Navy was for the experience, he really enjoyed JROTC so he thought he would enjoy the Navy as well, and the money isn’t bad. Well, it all worked out in the end because he graduated. He graduated in May and went in to Navel boot camp in December. He left on a Monday so my family took a day off from work and school to spend the day with him. Also, side note, every day I’ve been absent, it’s to see my brother. Anyway, I told myself that when he left I wasn’t going to cry, but we all know that’s not how it turned out. I was all good, you know holding it together, until I hugged him goodbye. That’s when I sobbed on his shoulder. And when he left I got his room. We got an occasional call from him, and my mom would cry every time she heard his voice. A few months later he graduated from boot camp, and my whole family got to go on an amazing trip to Illinois. That trip was honestly probably the best trip I’ve ever been on.

All of that was basically background for you to understand why I dedicate this post to him. Well, first of all he made it through high school and graduated. He actually went into Navel boot camp. Then he graduated from Navel boot camp too. Now he is basically going to culinary school to be a chef, but it’s called A-school.  He’s getting older and setting up a pretty good future for himself. I dedicate this post to him because I’m so proud of him and everything he has accomplished. He had some bumps in the road, but he got over them and now he’s a Navy sailor! Like how cool is that?

So Bubba if you’re reading this, good job for getting as far as you have in life. I think about you all the time and I miss you, but you’re doing great things for yourself. I love you. Oh, and thanks for your room, it looks very nice with my stuff in it.

10 Things You Should Know About High School

Howdy y’all! So we meet again, just kidding. The fact that I just said that probably weirded you out. Anyway… today we’re going to be talking about high school, because that’s exactly what everyone wants to talk about, right? The summer before I was suppose to start high school, was torture. I spent the whole summer worrying about what was going to happen and not having fun. I was worrying about if I was going to be lonely, if I was going to get lost, if I was going to have good teachers, if I would have anybody to sit with at lunch, if I would have friends in any of my classes, etc. Okay I think we all have a pretty good idea of how worried I was. However, by the second week of high school I had realized maybe it wouldn’t be so bad after all. So here are ten things you might want to know or keep in mind if you are going into high school.

  1. If someone tells you something along the lines of, “It’ll be fine” or “Don’t worry, you’ll do great”. No matter how much you don’t want to listen to them or how wrong you think they are, they’re usually right. Unless they’ve never been to high school, then how are they suppose to know?
  2. If you’re worried about getting bullied, or people making fun of you, don’t be. In high school pretty much everyone minds their own business. Everyone is just trying to do the same as you, get to class and make it through the week alive.
  3. High school is much better than middle school! In my experience. I hated middle school, everyone there would try to be cooler than they actually were, teachers were weird and couldn’t teach, and the cafeteria food sucked! Hey, but at least I didn’t have to do gym. In high school you actually do have more freedom, which I bet everyone is telling you.
  4. I’m going to be real with you, you are probably going to get lost, or at least be late to class, during the first, and maybe even second, week of school. The school is huge! I’m not trying to scare you, I’m just letting you know what you’re going into ahead of time.
  5. Ever heard of high school sweethearts? Really, you have? Well, they’re not real. I mean for the most of us they aren’t. There are a few lucky ones out there who find love with the snap of their finger, and flick of their wrist. I, unfortunately, am not one of those people, but we’re not talking about Lauren’s sad love life; not in this blog post at least.
  6. Teachers. Oh aren’t teachers just lovely? Some of them yes, others not so much. You know which ones I’m talking about, you’re saying their name in your head right now. Oh you’re not, just me? Anyway, you shouldn’t be worried about what teachers you’re going to have. I like all of my teachers, except for one, but we’re not going to talk about her right now. You will probably like most of your teachers, and the teachers you don’t like, you can rant about later.
  7. I don’t know if your school will have these or not, but, block days. Block days are two days out of the week where you only go to four of your classes. Four classes the first day, and the next four the second day. Some people hate them. Others, including myself, don’t mind them. To me it feels like the days go by faster, and you only have to see the teachers you hate one out of those two days.
  8. You guys all remember a beautiful thing called homework, right?. Well, you don’t have much of that in high school. The only homework you’ll have is work you didn’t finish in class, and maybe in math. I barely have any homework, but i’m in standard. If you want to be in BCA or do honors, that’s probably different for you.
  9. Midterms and finals. Do you guys have tests that you have to take at the end of the year called TNready or something along the lines of that? Well, midterms and finals are pretty much the same. You take a midterm in the middle of the year before you go on winter break, and you take a final at the end of the year. There are some exceptions to where you are exempt from them, which means you don’t have to take them.
  10. Last but not least, Enjoy it while you can. I know right now you might be thinking, “Heck no! High school is going to suck, I can’t wait for it to be over.” I know I did. However, high school is much easier and relaxing than adult life. If you don’t want to get involved that’s your choice, I’m not. If you want to slack off, do nothing, and fail your classes, that’s also up to you. Although, I bet the choices you make in high school, whether they’re good or not so good, they’ll have an effect on your future.

Well, after that boring lecture, that some people probably got annoyed with and probably didn’t listen to anyway, those are the ten things that I would like you to know, or keep in mind, as you go into high school. Thanks for taking time out of whatever you were doing to read this! And if you made it all the way done here, you’re a real trooper, congratulations! Or you just scrolled down here to see how long this was, which I respect because I do it too, so congratulations to you as well! Until my next post, bye!
